Abstract The objective of this work was to select maize hybrids using the GGE biplot analysis, as well as to evaluate their stability and adaptability in different environments of the North and Midwest regions of Brazil. Thirty-six maize hybrids were evaluated in 2018, in the following five environments in the Northern and Midwestern regions, respectively: in the municipality of Vilhena, in the state of Rondônia; and in the municipalities of Sorriso, Sinop, Alta Floresta, and Carlinda, in the Northern region of the state of Mato Grosso. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design. The analysis of variance was performed, and adaptability and stability were estimated by the GGE biplot method based on grain yield performance. A significant interaction between genotypes and environments was detected, and the biplot analysis was efficient in explaining 62.74% of the total variation in the first two principal components, with the formation of three macroenvironments. The 1P2227, 'BRS 3042', and 1P2265 hybrids showed high yield, responsiveness, and stability in the evaluated environments. The DKB310VTPRO2 hybrid was the most unstable genotype. The recommended hybrids are: DKB310 for the Sorriso and Vilhena macroenvironment; 1M1810 and 1O2106 for the Carlinda environment; and 1M1807 for the Sinop environment.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi selecionar híbridos de milho, por meio da análise GGE biplot, bem como avaliar sua estabilidade e adaptabilidade em diferentes ambientes das regiões Centro-Oeste e Norte do Brasil. Trinta e seis híbridos de milho foram avaliados em 2018, nos seguintes cinco ambientes das regiões Norte e Centro-Oeste, respectivamente: no município de Vilhena, no estado de Rondônia; e nos municípios de Sorriso, Sinop, Alta Floresta e Carlinda, na região norte do estado de Mato Grosso. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos completos ao acaso. Realizou-se a análise de variância, e estimaramse a adaptabilidade e a estabilidade pelo método GGE biplot com base na produtividade. Detectou-se interação significativa entre genótipos e ambientes, e a análise biplot foi eficiente para explicar 62,74% da variação total nos dois primeiros componentes principais, com a formação de três macroambientes. Os híbridos 1P2227, 'BRS 3042' e 1P2265 apresentam alta produtividade, capacidade de resposta e estabilidade nos ambientes avaliados. O híbrido DKB310VTPRO2 foi o genótipo mais instável. Os híbridos recomendados são: DKB310 para o macroambiente Sorriso e Vilhena; 1M1810 e 1O2106 para o ambiente Carlinda; e 1M1807 para o ambiente Sinop.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar cultivares de milho, cultivadas no Estado do Amazonas, que reúnam simultaneamente alta produtividade de grãos, adaptabilidade e estabilidade. Os ensaios foram conduzidos em sete ambientes do Amazonas, em delineamento de blocos ao acaso, com duas repetições. A produtividade de grãos de 30 cultivares de milho foi avaliada em quatro safras agrícolas, de 2011/2012 a 2014/2015. Os parâmetros genéticos foram estimados pela metodologia REML/Blup. A seleção quanto à adaptabilidade e à estabilidade baseou-se no valor genético predito e na média harmônica do desempenho relativo dos valores genéticos. Apesar da existência de interação genótipo x ambiente, identificaram-se cultivares com elevadas adaptabilidade e estabilidade. Os ambientes Iranduba - várzea, em 2011/2012 e 2014/2015 - e Rio Preto da Eva - terra firme, em 2012/2013 - destacaram-se como favoráveis, enquanto os ambientes Iranduba - terra firme, em 2011/2012 e 2012/2013 - e Manaus - terra firme, em 2012/2013 e 2013/2014 - foram classificados como desfavoráveis. O híbrido simples BRS 1055 apresentou superioridade produtiva e alta estabilidade nessa região. As variedades sintéticas Sint 10771, Sint 10781 e Sint 10699 apresentaram elevada adaptabilidade. BRS Caimbé apresenta adaptabilidade específica para cultivo em ambientes de terra firme do Estado do Amazonas.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate corn cultivars grown in the state of Amazonas, Brazil, which simultaneously show high grain yield, adaptability, and stability. The trials were carried out in seven environments in the state of Amazonas, in a randomized complete block design, with two replicates. The grain yield of 30 corn cultivars was evaluated in four growing seasons, from 2011/2012 to 2014/2015. The genetic parameters were estimated by the REML/Blup methodology. The selection for adaptability and stability was based on the predicted genetic value and on the harmonic mean of the relative performance of the genetic values. Despite the existence of genotype x environment interaction, cultivars with high adaptability and stability were identified. Iranduba - lowland, in 2011/2012 and 2014/2015 - and Rio Preto da Eva - upland, in 2012/2013 - stood out as favorable environments, while Iranduba - upland, in 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 - and Manaus - upland, in 2012/2013 and 2013/2014 - were classified as unfavorable environments. The single-cross hybrid BRS 1055 showed productive superiority and high stability in this region. The Sint 10771, Sint 10781, and Sint 10699 synthetic varieties showed high adaptability. BRS Caimbé shows specific adaptability to cropping in upland environments of the state of Amazonas, Brazil.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os efeitos genéticos aditivos e não aditivos sobre a eficiência de uso de P e a responsividade ao nutriente em linhagens de milho. Nove linhagens contrastantes - eficientes ou não quanto ao uso de P - foram avaliadas em cruzamentos dialélicos, em delineamento de blocos ao acaso, por dois anos, sob dois níveis de disponibilidade do nutriente em Latossolo Vermelho-Escuro distrófico. As linhagens L3 e L228-3 apresentaram os maiores efeitos médios da capacidade geral de combinação (CGC, ), o que é indício de eficiência, na ausência de P, e de responsividade, na presença. Os cruzamentos L51502020 x L22 e L36 x L56.800.84 apresentaram os maiores efeitos médios da capacidade específica de combinação (CEC, ), na presença e na ausência de P, respectivamente. Os componentes quadráticos para CGC foram superiores aos da CEC, na ausência de P, e inferiores, na presença, o que mostra que os efeitos aditivos predominaram na eficiência de uso, e os não aditivos, na responsividade ao nutriente. A capacidade combinatória dos genótipos interagiu com os ambientes; portanto, a seleção do melhor progenitor e da melhor combinação híbrida deve ser realizada para ambiente específico. As linhagens apresentam complementariedade gênica quanto à eficiência de uso de P.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate additive and nonadditive genetic effects on responsiveness and the P use efficiency by maize lines. Nine contrasting inbred lines - efficient or not regarding their P use efficiency - were evaluated in diallel crosses, in a randomized complete block design, for two years, under two availability levels of the nutrient in an Oxisol. The lines L3 and L228-3 showed the highest average effects for general combining ability (GCA, ), indicating use efficiency in the absence of P, and responsiveness, in the presence. The crosses L51502020 x L22 and L36 x L56.800.84 had the highest average effects for specific combining ability (SCA, ) in the presence and in the absence of P, respectively. The quadratic components for GCA were higher than those of SCA, in the absence of P, and lower in the presence, showing that the additive effects predominated in P use efficiency, and the nonadditive ones predominated in the plant responsiveness to the nutrient. The genotype combining ability interacted with the environments; therefore, the selection of the best parent and of the best hybrid combination should be done in specific environments. The inbred lines show genic complementary action regarding P use efficiency.

O armazenamento de produtos alimentícios processados pode causar alterações na sua composição química. Sendo assim, objetivou-se, com este trabalho, determinar a retenção de carotenóides em grãos de milho verde normal e biofortificado com precursores de vitamina A, em espigas minimamente processadas, embaladas em bandeja de poliestireno com cobertura de filme comercial e embalagem multicamadas nylon poli ao longo do período de estocagem do produto. Os carotenóides foram extraídos dos grãos de milho verde em esquema sequencial de solventes orgânicos e quantificados por CLAE. O experimento foi planejado em delineamento inteiramente casualizado em esquema fatorial, constituído de três fatores (cultivar, embalagem, período de armazenamento). Os grãos verdes das cultivares de milho BRS1030 e BRS4104 apresentam semelhança no perfil de carotenóides, sendo zeaxantina o principal carotenoide presente nos grãos verdes desses materiais. Maiores concentrações dos carotenóides luteína, β-criptoxantina, β-caroteno, carotenóides totais e do total de carotenóides precursores de vitamina foram identificadas nos grãos verdes do milho biofortificado BRS4104. A retenção de carotenóides em grãos verdes de milho, durante o período de estocagem das espigas minimamente processadas, não foi influenciada pelos tipos de embalagens estudadas.

Storing processed food products can cause alterations in their chemical compositions. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate carotenoid retention in the kernels of minimally processed normal and vitamin A precursor (proVA)-biofortified green corn ears that were packaged in polystyrene trays covered with commercial film or in multilayered polynylon packaging material and were stored. Throughout the storage period, the carotenoids were extracted from the corn kernels using organic solvents and were quantified using HPLC. A completely factorial design including three factors (cultivar, packaging and storage period) was applied for analysis. The green kernels of maize cultivars BRS1030 and BRS4104 exhibited similar carotenoid profiles, with zeaxanthin being the main carotenoid. Higher concentrations of the carotenoids lutein, β-cryptoxanthin, and β-carotene, the total carotenoids and the total vitamin A precursor carotenoids were detected in the green kernels of the biofortified BRS4104 maize. The packaging method did not affect carotenoid retention in the kernels of minimally processed green corn ears during the storage period.

This study aims to describe the single-cross, super sweet corn hybrid BRS Vivi, with above-average ear diameter, light-colored grains and competitiveness with other sweet corn cultivars. BRS Vivi is a contribution to the expansion of the range of available cultivars on the market and the genetic basis of sweet corn in Brazil.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi conhecer a adaptabilidade e a estabilidade de variedades e híbridos de milho, quando submetidos a diferentes condições ambientais do Meio-Norte brasileiro. Para isso, procedeu-se à avaliação de 22 híbridos, em uma rede experimental, e de 20 cultivares (variedades e híbridos) em outra rede, em diferentes ambientes, utilizando-se o delineamento experimental em blocos ao acaso, com três repetições. Os híbridos mostraram melhor adaptação que as variedades. Em ambas as redes detectaram-se diferenças entre os genótipos e os ambientes e comportamento inconsistente desses genótipos na média dos ambientes. As cultivares diferiram quanto a adaptabilidade nos ambientes desfavoráveis. Entre as cultivares de melhor adaptação (b0 > média geral), os híbridos PL 1335 e SHS 5050 e a variedade SHS 500 mostraram-se exigentes nas condições desfavoráveis (b1 > 1) e o híbrido SHS 5070 e a variedade AL 34 mostraram ser pouco exigentes nessas mesmas condições (b1 < 1). Os híbridos que mostraram adaptabilidade ampla (b0 > média geral e b1 = 1) tornam-se de importância para a agricultura da região, tais como: DKB 390, DAS 8480, DKB 455, BRS 1010, BRS 1030, dentre outros.

The objective of this study was to determine the adaptability and stability of varieties and hybrids of corn, when subjected to different environmental conditions in the Mid-Northern region of Brazil. For this, we proceeded to the assessment of 22 hybrids in an experimental grid, and 20 cultivars (varieties and hybrids) in another grid, in different environments, using an experimental design of randomized blocks with three replications. The hybrids showed better adaptation than did the varieties. In both grids differences were detected among genotypes and environments, and inconsistent behavior of these genotypes was detected across the average of the environments. The cultivars differed in their adaptability in unfavorable environments. Among those cultivars which best adapted (b0>overall average), the hybrids PL 1335 and SHS 5050, and the variety SHS 500, showed to be demanding under unfavorable conditions (b1>1) and the hybrid SHS 5070 and variety AL 34, proved to be undemanding under these same conditions (b 1<1). The hybrids which demonstrated wide adaptability (b0> overall average and b1=1) such as: DKB 390, DAS 8480, DKB 455, BRS 1010 and BRS 1030, among others, become important for agriculture in the region.

The objective of this study was to evaluate iron bioavailability of maize genotypes, and analyze the correlation between in vitro and in vivo methods. Dialysable iron was analyzed in 13 genotypes from which 5 were selected for the biological assay. Mean iron content of the genotypes (n=13) was 17.93±2.93 mg kg-1. Phytate varied from 0.77% to 1.03%; phytate: iron molar ratio from 30.64 to 55.41; and soluble iron from 13.17 to 39.63%. The highest value for dialysable iron was 19.14%. In the biological assay, the control group, that received ferrous sulphate, did not present significant difference between the genotypes for Hb gain, Hb gain per gram of iron consumed and HRE. Hb gain did not present a significant correlation with in vitro assay. However, there were positive correlations varying from 0.653 to 0.809. The maize genotypes evaluated presented a good bioavailability since the genotypes showed the same result in hemoglobin gain than control group.

Biodisponibilidade de ferro de diferentes genótipos de milho desenvolvidos em programa de melhoramento genético: estudos in vitro e in vivo. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a biodisponibilidade do ferro de genótipos de milho e analisar a correlação entre métodos in vitro e in vivo. Ferro dialisável foi analisado em13 genótipos, a partir do qual 5 foram selecionados para o ensaio biológico. A média de teor de ferro dos genótipos (n= 13) foi 17,93 ± 2,93 mg kg-1. O teor de fitato variou de 0,77% a 1,03%; razão molar fitato:ferro de 30,64 a 55,41; e ferro solúvel de 13,17 a 39,63%.O valor mais alto para o ferro dialisável foi 19,14%. No ensaio biológico, o grupo controle, que recebeu sulfato ferrso, não apresentou diferença significativa entre os genótipos no ganho Hb, ganho de Hb por grama de ferro consumido e HRE. Ganho de Hb não apresentou correlação significativa com o ensaio in vitro. No entanto, houve correlações positivas variando de 0,653 a 0,809. Os genótipos de milho avaliados apresentaram uma boa biodisponibilidade uma vez que os genótipos apresentaram o mesmo resultado quanto ao ganho de hemoglobina em relação ao grupo controle.

Ainda que sejam considerados os aspectos de magnitude e significância, o estudo de correlações entre caracteres por si só não garante causa e efeito entre eles. Dessa forma, o objetivo deste trabalho foi desdobrar as correlações fenotípicas em seus efeitos diretos e indiretos, pela análise de trilha, considerando o perfil de carotenoides em genótipos de milho. Foram utilizados dados obtidos do ensaio nacional de cultivares de milho conduzido pela Embrapa Milho e Sorgo, no ano agrícola 2004/2005, com média de 10 genótipos em cinco ambientes. Avaliaram-se os teores de carotenoides totais (CT), α e β-carotenos, luteína, zeaxantina e β-criptoxantina. A xantofila zeaxantina apresenta o maior efeito direto sobre β-caroteno. As altas correlações entre β-caroteno e carotenoides totais e entre β-caroteno e β-criptoxantina são devidas ao efeito indireto, via zeaxantina. A seleção direta de genótipos com altos teores de β-caroteno apresenta-se como a alternativa de maior efetividade, mas se outras frações de carotenoides também forem consideradas, esquemas de seleção simultânea de caracteres, por meio da utilização de índices de seleção, mostram-se mais eficientes na obtenção de genótipos com altos teores de β-caroteno do que a resposta correlacionada.

Although aspects of magnitude and significance are considered, the study of correlations between traits, alone, does not necessarily guarantee a cause and effect relationship between them. Therefore, the objective of this study was to use path analysis to allow the unfolding of correlations in direct and indirect effects, considering the carotenoids profile of maize genotypes. Data was obtained from the national assay of maize cultivars conducted by Embrapa Maize and Sorghum in the 2004/2005 growing season, with means of ten genotypes in five environments. The contents of total carotenoids (CT), alpha and β-carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin and β-criptoxantin were evaluated. Xanthophyll zeaxanthin provided the highest direct effect on β-carotene. The high correlations between β-carotene and total carotenoids and between β-carotene and β-criptoxanthin are due the indirect effect via zeaxanthin. The direct selection of genotypes with high levels of β-carotene appears as a more effective alternative, but if other fractions of carotenoids were also considered, methods of simultaneous selection of characters using selection indices are more efficient in obtaining genotypes with high levels of β-carotene than the correlated response.

Objetivou-se caracterizar 22 linhagens tropicais de milho, de diferentes origens genéticas, quanto à disponibilidade de Zn e de Fe, por meio das razões molares ácido fítico/Zn e ácido fítico/Fe. Os teores de Zn e Fe foram determinados por espectrofotometria de absorção atômica e os de P por colorimetria. Três métodos de triagem para análise dos teores de ácido fítico (AF) foram testados e um, baseado na reação com 2,2'-bipiridina, foi selecionado. Observou-se variabilidade significativa nos teores de Zn (17,5 a 42 mg.kg-1), Fe (12,2 a 36,7 mg.kg-1), P (230 a 400 mg.100 g-1), AF (484 a 1056 mg.100 g-1), P fítico (140 a 293 mg.100 g-1), P disponível(43.5 to 199.5 mg.100 g-1) e na relação P disponível/ P total e razões molares AF/Zn (18,0 a 43,5) e AF/Fe (16,3 a 45,5). As linhagens 560977, 560978 e 560982 mostraram maior disponibilidade de Zn e as linhagens 560975, 560977, 561010 e 561011 apresentaram o melhor resultado de disponibilidade de Fe. As linhagens 560975, 560977 e 560978 também mostraram melhor relação P disponível/ P total. Assim, as linhagens 560975, 560977 e 560978 foram consideradas com potencial para desenvolvimento de cultivares de milho com alta disponibilidade de Fe e/ou Zn.

The aim of this study was to characterize the Zn and Fe availability by phytic acid/Zn and phytic acid/Fe molar ratios, in 22 tropical maize inbred lines with different genetic backgrounds. The Zn and Fe levels were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry and the P through colorimetry method. Three screening methods for phytic acid (Phy) analysis were tested and one, based on the 2,2'-bipyridine reaction, was select. There was significant variability in the contents of zinc (17.5 to 42 mg.kg-1), iron (12.2 to 36.7 mg.kg-1), phosphorus (230 to 400 mg.100 g-1), phytic acid (484 to 1056 mg.100 g-1), phytic acid P (140 to 293 mg.100 g-1) and available-P (43.5 to 199.5 mg.100 g-1), and in the available-P/total-P ratio (0.14 to 0.50), Phy/Zn (18.0 to 43.5) and Phy/Fe (16.3 to 45.5) molar ratios. Lines 560977, 560978 and 560982 had greater availability of Zn and lines 560975, 560977, 561010 and 5610111 showed better Fe availability. Lines 560975, 560977 and 560978 also showed better available-P/total-P ratio. Thus, the lines 560975, 560977 and 560978 were considered to have the potential for the development of cultivars of maize with high availability of Fe and/or Zn.

As cultivares de milho BRS Cipotânea e BRS Diamantina foram desenvolvidas pela Embrapa Milho e Sorgo a partir de acessos do Banco de Germoplasma de Milho. A avaliação foi participativa. Essas variedades foram desenvolvidas visando disponibilizar aos agricultores variedades de milho com palha apropriada para o uso artesanal.

The maize cultivars BRS Cipotânea and BRS Diamantina were developed from accessions of the Maize Germplasm Bank of Embrapa Maize and Sorghum. The evaluation was participative, performed by scientists and end-users. The varieties were developed to provide farmers with maize varieties suitable for corn-husk crafts.

O banco de germoplasma de milho (BGMilho) preserva quase 4000 acessos visando conservação e uso. Entretanto, esse uso é reduzido, pois seus acessos apresentam desempenho inferior aos genótipos elite. O pré-melhoramento visa contornar esse problema, ampliando a informação sobre o germoplasma e introgredindo alelos úteis. A má distribuição de chuvas e a seca levam a perdas de produção de milho, o que faz com que a tolerância à seca seja uma das prioridades do melhoramento.Neste trabalho, foram avaliados acessos do BGMilho quanto à tolerância à seca. Fatores ambientais, genotípicos e suas interações influenciaram a manifestação fenotípica, entretanto a interação entre genótipos e regimes de irrigação esteve ausente, levando a não identificação de acessos com comportamento diferenciado nas duas condições hídricas. Os seguintes acessos foram destacados devido ao comportamento superior para vários caracteres: SP154, BA166, MG099, CE002, SE025, BA154, BA194, BA085, MG076, PR053, Roxo Macapá, SE016 e AL018.

The maize genebank (GBmaize) preserves nearly 4,000 accessions for conservation and use. The use is however restricted because the accessions do not perform as well as the elite genotypes. This problem can be reduced by pre-breeding, i.e., by extending the information on germplasm and introgressing useful alleles. Since irregular rainfall distribution and drought induce maize yield losses, drought tolerance is a main breeding target. In this study, the GBmaize accessions were evaluated for drought tolerance. Environmental factors, genotypes and the respective interactions influence the phenotypic expression. There was however no interaction genotype - irrigation level, so no accessions with different performance under the two water regimes could be identified. The performance of the following accessions was promising for a number of traits: SP154, BA166, MG099, CE002, SE025, BA154, BA194, BA085, MG076, PR053, Roxo Macapá, SE016, and AL018.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi caracterizar e avaliar a variabilidade quanto ao teor e perfil de carotenoides nos grãos de 134 genótipos de milho (Zea mays), com vistas à utilização em programas de biofortificação. Os materiais foram provenientes dos campos experimentais e do Banco Ativo de Germoplasma da Embrapa Milho e Sorgo, Sete Lagoas, MG. São cultivares e híbridos comerciais, linhagens-elite e outros acessos escolhidos com base na coloração amarelo-alaranjada do endosperma. A quantificação do teor de carotenoides totais, carotenos e xantofilas mono-hidroxilada e di-hidroxilada dos grãos foi realizada por método cromatográfico-espectrofotométrico. As médias encontradas nos grãos foram 22,34µ gg-1 de carotenoides totais, 2,55µ gg-1 de carotenos, 3,86µ gg-1 de xantofilas mono-hidroxiladas e 15,93µ gg-1 de xantofilas di-hidroxiladas. Os genótipos foram agrupados em 18 grupos pelo método de Tocher. O germoplasma da Embrapa possui potencial para ser usado em programas de desenvolvimento de linhagens de milho biofortificadas, quanto ao total de carotenoides pró-vitamina A.

The objective of this work was to characterize 134 maize (Zea mays) genotypes, for carotenoids content and build a genetic profile to facilitate future breeding to increase grain nutritional value (biofortification). Seeds came from experimental fields and from the Banco Ativo de Germoplasma of Embrapa Milho e Sorgo, Sete Lagoas, MG, Brazil. The genotypes were co mmercial hybrids, varieties, and inbred lines developed by the Embrapa biofortification program and other accessions, chosen for their yellow-orange endosperm color. Total grain carotenoids, carotenes, xanthophylls (monohydroxylates and dihydroxylates) were determined by chromatographic-spectrophotometric methods. The detected averages were: 22.34µ gg-1 for total carotenoids, 2.55µ gg-1 for carotenes, 3.86µ gg-1 for monohydroxylated xanthophylls, and 15.93µ gg-1 for dihydroxylated xanthophylls. The genotypes variability was divided into 18 groups by the method of Tocher. The Embrapa germplasm has variability and potential for development of maize lines biofortified for total of provitamin A carotenoids.

The study of inbreeding depression is important for breeding strategies such as use of inbred progenies or extraction of inbreed lines. A diallel of 28 maize open-pollinated varieties was evaluated in 10 environments in the early 1990s. At the same time, S1 populations for each of the 28 varieties were evaluated in the same 10 experiments (environments). Yield reductions of the populations from S0 to S1 (mean of the 10 environments), varied from 34.6% (CMS-01) to 59.2% (CMS-30), with an average of 49.1%. Inbreeding depression was greater in populations with a wider genetic base, which had never been exposed to inbreeding (CMS-30, BR-107, PH4, Cunha, Saracura, Nitrodent, and Nitroflint). Inbred lines with greater yield means should be obtained from the BR-105, BR-111, CMS-01, CMS-03, BR-106, CMS-14c, and CMS-28 populations. The use of parameter estimates generated by analysis of inbreeding depression, allow to make inferences about frequencies of deleterious alleles in the population. The frequencies of favorable alleles in the parents can be obtained by diallel analysis. The association of these two types of information, can provide a better interpretation of the genetic parameters and also can improve the process of selection of parents for either an intra- or an inter-populational breeding program.

Pouca ênfase tem sido dada na identificação de novas fontes de germoplama tropical que podem ser usadas em programas de melhoramento de milho. São necessárias informações adicionais sobre a performance e classificação heterótica de germoplasmas tropicais. O objetivo deste estudo foi identificar acessos elite originados do Programa Latino Americano de Milho (LAMP) que poderiam contribuir para aumentar o nível de heterose com padrões heteróticos do Brasil. Setenta e dois acessos elites do LAMP foram cruzados com os testadores BR 105 (padrão heterótico flint) e BR 106 (padrão heterótico dentado). Os setenta e dois testcrosses, resultantes de cada cruzamento, e nove testemunhas foram avaliados em quatro locais. Utilizou-se o delineamento em látice simples 9 × 9. A análise combinada mostrou diferença significativa entre tratamentos para o caráter peso de espigas sendo também significativa a interação tratamentos × locais. Foram identificados, com ambos os testadores, cruzamentos mais produtivos que o híbrido duplo BR 201 (testemunha comercial). Com a variedade BR 105, a heterose em relação ao pai superior variou de --28% a 26% e os acessos SE 032 e PE 001 foram selecionados para melhoramento. Com a variedade BR 106, a heterose em relação ao pai superior variou de --35% a 17% e os acesses PE 011 e Pasco 14 foram selecionados para posteriores trabalhos de melhoramento. Os acessos selecionados serão melhorados através de esquemas de seleção recorrente para produção e características agronômicas. Estes acessos podem ser explorados, dentro e entre os grupos heteróticos, para produzir combinações híbridas ou para serem usados como variedades melhoradas de milho.

Little emphasis has been placed on identifying new sources of tropical maize germplasm that can be used in breeding programs. Additional information on the performance and heterotic classification of tropical germplasm is needed. This study was conducted to identify elite maize accessions from Latin America that could contribute to increase the level of heterosis with the best heterotic patterns of Brazil. Seventy-two elite accessions from the Latin American Maize Project (LAMP) were crossed with the testers BR 105 (flint kernel Suwan background) and BR 106 (dent kernel Tuxpeño background). The 72 crosses plus 9 checks were evaluated using a simple 9 × 9 lattice in four locations that represent one tropical region. The combined analysis showed highly significant differences among treatments for ear weight and the interaction treatment × location was also significant. With both testers better crosses for ear weight were identified in relation to the double cross BR 201 (commercial check). With the tester BR 105, the high parent heterosis ranged from --28% to 26%, the accessions SE 032 and PE 001 were selected for further work. With the tester BR 106, the high parent heterosis ranged from --35% to 17% and the accessions PE 011 and Pasco 14 were selected for further work. The selected accessions will be improved through recurrent selection schemes to increase yield and improve agronomic traits. Afterwards they can be exploited, within and between heterotic groups, to produce highly productive hybrid combinations, or used per se as improved maize varieties.

Três ciclos de seleção entre e dentro de progênies de meios-irmãos foram praticados na população de milho (Zea mays L.) de alta qualidade protéica CMS-52, nos tabuleiros costeiros dos estados de Sergipe e Bahia, no período de 1995 a 1997, visando à obtenção de uma população melhor adaptada às condições edafoclimáticas da região. As progênies foram avaliadas em látice simples 14 x 14, com recombinação das progênies superiores, dentro do mesmo ano agrícola, de modo a se obter um ciclo por ano. Os valores dos parâmetros genéticos decresceram do ciclo original para o ciclo I, mantendo-se no ciclo II com magnitudes semelhantes ao ciclo I. As altas magnitudes desses parâmetros genéticos, as altas médias de produtividades das progênies, e o ganho médio esperado com a seleção entre e dentro de progênies, por ciclo de seleção (12,3%), mostram o grande potencial da população em responder à seleção, o que permitirá a obtenção de uma população mais produtiva e melhor adaptada às condições edafoclimáticas da região. A magnitude da interação progênies x locais evidenciou a importância de se avaliarem as progênies em mais de um local, para melhorar a eficiência do processo seletivo e obter estimativas mais consistentes dos componentes da variância.

Three cycles of selection among and within halfsib progenies were carried out in the high quality protein maize (Zea mays L.) population CMS-52, at the tabuleiros costeiros of Sergipe and Bahia, Brazil, during the period of 1995 to 1997. The work aimed at obtaining a better adapted population for the regional environment. The progenies were evaluated on a 14 x 14 látice design. Recombination of the superior progenies was processed within the same year in order to get one cycle per year. The values of the genetic parameters decreased from the original cycle to cycle I, keeping at cycle II similar magnitudes of cycle I. The high magnitudes of the genetic parameters, the high productivity means of progenies, and the averaged gain expected from the selection among and within progenies per selection cycle (12.3%) show the high potential of the population to respond to selection, which will permit to attain a higher yielding population, better adapted to the regional environment. The high progeny x location interaction showed the importance for progeny evaluation in more than one location, to increase the efficiency of the selection process and to obtain more accurate estimates of variance components.
